Tourism / Discovery
Halfway between Blois and Chartres, Châteaudun is a town of history and heritage with no less than 58 listed or classified sites and monuments.
This medieval town has a fascinating castle, which is today an emblematic monument of the city, its keep (12th century) being one of the best preserved in the world. Historical anecdote: this castle was the property of Jean de Dunois, known as the « Bastard of Orléans », a faithful companion in arms of Joan of Arc. Take a canoe tour around Chemars Island and admire the castle from all angles.
Châteaudun’s heritage sites take you through centuries of history: the Madeleine church (the town’s largest religious building), the Place du 18 octobre (witness to the fire of 1723 and the rebuilding of the town) or the houses dating from the 15th and 16th centuries.
Another way to travel back in time: the Foulon caves, covering more than 10 000 m2. Naturally formed by water, they take you back 90 million years for a trip under the city. Its marine quartz and chalcedony geodes make it a unique place in the world.
The Loir river offers you a beautiful path to follow the Camino de Santiago. Many signposted trails and the « Vallée du Loir à Vélo » cycle path guide you through the surrounding countryside in an unspoilt environment.
All these historical and natural wonders explain the labels awarded to the town: « Sites et Cités Remarquables de France » and « Plus Beaux Détours de France ».
In summer, enjoy the activities of Saint-Jean Plage: sports activities, restaurants, board games, etc… Go to the Jardin des Grands Moulins and on the Chemars Island.
