Lorca is both a natural and historical city, part of the Calnegre and Cabo Cope Regional Park in the mountains of the Mediterranean coast. Fossil dunes, beaches and cliffs are to be wandered through during your hikes. Situated in the region of Murcia, Lorca is described as the ‘baroque city’. Its monuments contributed to its classification of a ‘Town of Historical and Artistic Interest’ since 1964. Visit the Plaza de Espana and get steeped in the unique atmosphere of this medieval town. The facades surrounding the square are absolutely charming. From there you have easy access to the tourist office and the church of St. Patrick (Colegiata de San Patricio), listed as a National Heritage Site. The castle of Lorca was built between the 11th and 13th centuries and overlooks the town, revealing its medieval past thanks to its fortress and fortified towers very well preserved. It now hosts touristic tours and exhibitions on the Middle Ages. The Museo Arqueológico Municipal de Lorca is a must-see during your stay. A visit will take you through the ages, from the Palaeolithic to the construction of the castle, via Roman times and many other cultural periods. In March, Holy Week is an impressive and emotional celebration. Dozens of people dressed up as Roman emperors, Egyptian troops, Roman gods, horsemen... parade on foot and on heavy floats, highlighting the devotion, art, colours and music that celebrate the commemoration of the death of Jesus Christ.
