A town with a rich historical past located in the Saône-et-Loire region, Autun is a veritable gateway to the history of Gaul and a treasure trove for heritage lovers! Founded by the Roman Emperor Augustus and considered to be the ‘sister and emulator of Rome’, immerse yourself in Autun's ancient history with a visit to the Roman Theatre! Part of the first list of historic monuments registered in 1840, it could accommodate up to 14,000 people for various performances. During your visit, you'll also be able to walk through the two gates still standing from the 1st century AD, true vestiges of the era of Gaul in Lyons. The remains of the Temple of Janus, meanwhile, overlook the town, and will introduce you to another aspect of Roman architecture. As well as its history, Autun also has a lot to offer nature lovers! You can take a walk around the Vallon lake, just a stone's throw from the service area. The town is also the gateway to the Morvan Regional Nature Park, opening the way to a host of equally enjoyable walks.
