The circuit heads north to the province of Liège, where the Ourthe winds its loops through steep landscapes. Around Hamoir and Esneux, limestone shapes beautiful villages and impressive rocky ridges, a perfect meeting point for lovers of bucolic settings and dizzying viewpoints.

To discover:

  • The Loop of the Ourthe at Roche-aux-Faucons (Esneux): Access one of the most famous and impressive panoramas in the region (a 45-minute walk). This plunging viewpoint over the wooded loop of the Ourthe is spectacular.

  • The Domaine de Palogne (near Hamoir): Stroll at the foot of the Logne fortified castle in this beautiful natural setting (a 2-hour walk). The site offers lovely shaded walks along the river and relaxation areas on the lawns.

The itinerary now dives into the province of Namur to stop at Houyet, the must-visit home of the Lesse. It is a rural, refreshing and dynamic stopover, where limestone nature has sculpted impressive caves and cliffs hidden deep in the woods.

  • The Furfooz Park: Explore this unique nature reserve that combines a Gallo-Roman archaeological heritage with geological curiosities (a 2-hour hike). The shaded path winds along the cliffs and offers magnificent views over the river.

  • The Castle of Gendron-Celles: Admire the romantic silhouette of this historic building from the valley. It is the perfect starting point for walking in the woods along the surrounding waterways.

The journey continues towards the south-west of Wallonia, at the gateway to the Boot of Hainaut. Couvin welcomes you to a verdant setting marked by the "Calestienne", a limestone strip home to incredible geological secrets and underground waterways that have shaped the landscape over millennia. To discover:

  • The Neptune Caves: Explore this remarkable underground site (a 1-hour guided tour) which ends with a boat ride on the underground river amidst a sound and light show.

  • The Fondry des Chiens (Nismes, near Couvin): Discover this gigantic natural chasm unique in Belgium, a true geological curiosity (a 1-hour walk). The paths allow you to descend into the heart of this impressive fault amidst rare flora.

The circuit opens onto the plains of Hainaut, marking the transition between the preserved nature of the Sambre and the rich historical heritage of Mons, designated a former European Capital of Culture. An ideal stopover to blend the peace of towpaths with the architectural splendour of a great city of art.

  • The Grand-Place and the Belfry of Mons: Stroll across the magnificent historic square of Mons and climb up to its UNESCO-listed baroque Belfry. Do not forget to pet the head of the Guardroom Monkey for good luck.

  • The Aulne Abbey (heading up the Sambre from Erquelinnes): Discover the romantic ruins of this ancient Cistercian abbey located in a verdant valley by the water.

Ath and Lessines invite you into an authentic atmosphere, marked by age-old folklore of giants and historical stone quarrying. A final stage full of character, ideal for appreciating the calm of the intersecting Flemish and Walloon landscapes.

To discover:

  • The Burbant Tower in Ath: Visit this 12th-century medieval keep, a major witness to the military history of the region. The park surrounding the tower offers a lovely shaded stopover.

  • The Notre-Dame à la Rose Hospital (Lessines): Explore one of the oldest self-managed hospitals in Europe (a 2-hour visit). This remarkable complex, preserved in its original state, features superb period rooms and a magnificent medicinal plant garden.
