Roquefort

You are now entering the land of Roquefort! Although it's best known for its cheese, this region also offers many nuggets, testifying to a rich and varied heritage and history. The commune of Roquefort awaits you!

Things to do : 

  • Stroll through the town center and its medieval vestiges: the Sainte-Marie church, the 15th-century St. Joseph chapel, the Gothic Pène-Cadet bridge over the Douze, the Place des Cagots, the old towers of the Château de Marsan and more.
  • You can also visit the magnificent “La Monumental des Pins” bullring. Inaugurated in 1951, they are listed as a historic monument.
  • Take a trip back in time to the Middle Ages at the Chateau de Foix!

  • Visit the Arjuzanx Nature Reserve: a showcase of diversity! Enjoy its lakes, supervised beach, water sports, yoga sessions or discovery trails: there's something for everyone! 
  • Take a leisurely stroll through the 5-hectare Domaine de Moré arboretum, to be discovered in all seasons. Take the opportunity to visit the Moré pond with its weir and fishing pontoons.
  • Take advantage of the many activities on offer after dark, such as themed evenings, an open-air cinema, applaud the gala comico taurin (known as “charlotade” in our region) in the beautiful wooden arena, take part in a gourmet walk... For a guaranteed festive atmosphere!

Vielle-Saint-Girons

The route continues along the Landes coast in the commune of Vielle Saint Girons, which boasts 17 kilometers of Atlantic coastline. Nature lovers will enjoy exceptional landscapes, some of them man-made.

Things to do :

  • Explore the town center to admire the Sauveté column, built in the 11th and 12th centuries, and the medieval heritage on the route to Santiago de Compostela. 
  • Marvel at the immense pine trees planted in the 19th century to fix the dunes during a forest walk. 
  • Sink your teeth into the sand on one of Vielle Saint Girons' 3 fine sandy beaches, with a choice of lazing or water sports.

Saint Julien-en-Born et Mimizan

Continue the Landes route with Mimizan and Saint Julien-en-Born, where pine trees and long sandy beaches are characteristic of the authentic charm of these two destinations. 

Things to do :

  • Try your hand at fishing at one of the many dedicated sites, the ideal spot for passionate anglers to land pollock, sea bream, sea bass or even meagre.
  • Stroll through the center of Mimizan and admire the late 12th-century porch bell tower, remnant of a vast priory and a UNESCO World Heritage site. 
  • Keep your eyes wide open on the Etang de la Mailloueyre discovery trail on the Leslurgues nature reserve. An impressive diversity of landscapes, with dunes, freshwater ponds, springs, marshes, forest and two animal observatories to delight children.
  • Enjoy cycling, water sports, walking and much more!

Pontenx-les-Forges

The journey continues a little further north, to Pontenx les Forges. This village of character reveals the traces of a prosperous industrial past from the 18th to the 19th century. The combination of garluche stone and brick houses gives Pontenx-les-Forges its typical charm.

What to do :

  • Put time on hold and stroll through the Bouricos district to discover its heritage and traditional skills such as basket-making. 
  • Stroll under the pine forest along the Etang de la Forge on the 14.7-kilometre loop of the courant des Forges discovery trail. 
  • Walk through the streets of the village of Pontenx-les-Forges and learn about its history through its architectural heritage.

Gastes

The penultimate stage of this beautiful journey ends in the town of Gastes, in the north of the Landes département. This authentic commune is located in the very heart of the Landes forest near Lac Parentis-Biscarrosse.

Things to do :

  • Try your hand at water sports, such as sailing, paddling, board sports or pedal-boating for the less adventurous. 
  • Set up your fishing rod on the shores of the lake for fishing enthusiasts. Pike-perch, carp and pike populate the bottom of Lac Parentis-Biscarrosse. 
  • Take a stroll around the town's port, where boats are part of the cultural heritage of this peaceful destination.

Biscarosse

Welcome to Biscarosse to round off this wonderful trip along the Landes coast! On the agenda: relaxation, leisure and nature. From cycling and water sports to fishing and lounging on the beaches and lakes, there's something for everyone!  Don't forget to pay a visit to the Landes forest, a natural park covering almost a million hectares all along the Atlantic coast. 

Things to do : 

  • Discover the 14th- and 15th-century church of Saint Martin, built of typical Landes stone: the “garluche”.
  • Visit the Musée de l'Hydraviation with its collections, documents and restored vintage seaplanes.
  • Dive back in time at the Musée des Traditions, where you'll learn about Landes heritage and daily life since the Middle Ages.
  • Pass by the 14th-century Château de Montbron.
  • See artist Olga Kisseleva's sculpture, a tribute to the 600-year-old L'Orme Ancien tree, installed on the same site.
