The Dordogne, formerly the province of Périgord, is adorned with colours through its landscapes and its terroir. Périgord, a privileged witness to human presence from prehistory to the present day, boasts 4 colours representative of its identity. Black for its dense forests, purple for its vineyards, white for its white limestone rock, and green for its luxuriant nature. Sarlat

Located in the east of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, between the Dordogne and Vézère valleys, Sarlat is the flagship town of the Périgord Noir region.

Things to do: 

  • Start with a visit to the market! One of the biggest in Aquitaine, you'll find plenty of local produce all year round, depending on the season: foie gras, ceps, confits and magrets, truffles, walnuts, strawberries and other delicious local produce await you on Wednesday mornings and Saturdays.

  • Visit the Manoir de Gisson, listed as a historic monument and the only private building in town open to the public. Immerse yourself in the daily life of the owners, with period furniture for an authentic reconstruction!

  • Get a bird's eye view of Sarlat as you visit the former Eglise Sainte Marie!  The bell tower has been converted into a panoramic elevator by architect Jean Nouvel: a must-see!

Saint Crépin et Carlucet

Located in the “Golden Triangle” of the Dordogne Valley, in the heart of Périgord Noir between Sarlat and the Lascaux caves, let yourself be charmed by this picturesque Correze village and its medieval heritage! 

What to do : 

  • Take advantage of the many hiking trails for beginners and more experienced hikers alike. 

  • Visit the Château de Lacypierre, dating from the early 16th century and typically Périgord. A former feudal stronghold, its foundations date back to the 13th century.

  • Pass through the village of Carlucet, and visit the church of Sainte Marie-Sainte Anne. This Romanesque-Byzantine church features a magnificent altarpiece and an old stoup that leads to an enfeus cemetery with tombs set in the thickness of the wall.

Saint-Léon sur Vézère

Saint-Léon sur Vézère, classified as one of France's most beautiful villages, lies between Montignac and Les Eyzies, and is nestled in a loop of the Vézère river. Come and discover the charm of a typical medieval village, its historic heritage and its authentic character! 

Things to do 

  • Stroll through the narrow streets of the town center or along the waterfront, enjoy the serene atmosphere, local heritage and shops, taste the local cuisine and appreciate Perigordian hospitality.

  • Visit the Manoir de la Salle, an architectural ensemble built in the 14th century.  It comprises a keep, a garden, a master tower, a magnificent small manor house and a romantic garden adorned with flower beds, trees and shrubs, and has been inhabited since the Middle Ages.

Bourdeilles

After a furtive passage through the white Périgord and its white limestone, enter the green Périgord. Surrounded by lush vegetation, Bourdeilles lies in the Dronne valley, a veritable natural setting for recharging your batteries. 

Things to do :  

  • Step back in time with a visit to the 13th-century medieval château of Bourdeilles, built on a rocky spur with its 32-metre-high keep and Renaissance pavilion. 
  • Take out the binoculars and observe the birdlife of the Dronne Valley nature reserve, including the peregrine falcon and the rook.
  • Discover Brantômes, the green Venice of Périgord, and its medieval castle.
