Exploited since the 10th century, the silver lead vein in the Fournel valley is the origin of the name of the town of Argentière. The mine was taken over in the 19th century and is one of the largest mines in the southern Alps and the leading industry in the Hautes-Alpes department. Accompanied by a guide, walk through 700m of galleries in the footsteps of the miners of yesteryear for a unique underground journey! Tourism / Discovery

L'Argentière-la-Bessée is the gateway to the Pays des Ecrins, situated at an altitude of 1000m. It provides access to the neighbouring valleys: Freissinières, Vallouise and Fournel. As soon as the snow melts, the town becomes a paradise for nature sports and white water sports (rafting) on the azure-coloured river. It also hosts many national and international canoeing and kayaking competitions. Benefiting from a very sunny climate and the pure mountain air, you will enjoy beautiful walks in the Écrins National Park. On the heritage side, several monuments are to be discovered such as the Tour des Hermes with its clock overlooking the Argentière, the church of Saint-Apollinaire, the chapel of Saint-Jean from the 12th century. The Argentière-la-Bessée market is held all year round, every Friday morning, next to the town hall.
