Tourism / Discovery

Perched on a promontory, Puylaurens offers an exceptional panorama over the Lauragais plain, the Montagne Noire and, on clear days, the Pyrenees. This medieval bastide, a former stronghold rich in history, is the birthplace of “Marianne”, symbol of the French Republic, first named by Guillaume Lavabre, a local shoemaker-troubadour, in 1792. The historic center invites visitors to stroll through its cobbled streets, ramparts, and half-timbered houses. The Church of Notre-Dame-du-Lac, rebuilt after several destructions, bears witness to the town’s eventful past (Catharism, wars of religion). The surroundings of Puylaurens abound with hiking trails, particularly towards the Montagne Noire, offering varied landscapes of forests, hills, and breathtaking viewpoints over the surrounding nature.
