In the heart of the Dordogne Valley, near Sarlat-la-Canéda, Collonges-la-Rouge and Rocamadour, the medieval town of Martel is listed as one of the ‘Most Beautiful Villages of France’.
Nicknamed ‘the town of 7 towers’, Martel has a rich heritage, good gastronomic addresses and a typical market (every Wednesday and Saturday mornings under the market hall). This emphasis on local produce, such as walnuts or truffles, has earned the town the ‘Site remarquable du goût’ label.
You will love the charming and picturesque streets, from the Raymondie Palace and its belfry (built in 1280) to the covered market and its chestnut wood frame… many curiosities are to be discovered during your walks.
From Martel, board the ‘Truffadou’, a steam train that used to transport truffles on the side of the cliffs, and enjoy a one-hour guided tour. The typical landscapes of the Dordogne are yours to discover.
If you are looking for hiking trails, Martel offers several paths, including the one that led the pilgrims of Santiago de Compostela to Rocamadour.
