Nicknamed “The pearl of the Cévennes”, Saint-Jean-du-Gard is a major tourist destination in the Cévennes, 80 km north of Montpellier. On your walks through the village, you will come across numerous monuments: the Pont Vieux (Old Bridge), the Château de Saint-Jean (witness to the French Wars of Religion), the temple, the clock tower, the Vicar's house in the oldest part of the village and the fountain built by Stevenson, author of "Treasure Island" and " Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde". Besides being a historic town, it is also an incomparable hiking destination. You can enjoy walks in the heart of nature along the Gardon river, then continue on to the many hiking trails, such as the one leading to the Pic d'Arbousse (7.6 km). This hike will guide you to an incredible panorama of the entire Cévennes valley. You can also follow Robert Louis Stevenson's famous "Travels with a Donkey in the Cévennes", which ended in Saint-Jean-du-Gard after 220 km of adventure on the GR70. Between Anduze and Saint-Jean-du-Gard, discover the Gardon valley and its remarkable sights on board an authentic steam train! This 13 km long ride is open from March to October. On top of that, the train serves the Bambouseraie botanical garden. Some of the bamboos grow up to 25 metres high, typical villages are recreated and a variety of gardens await you! Many exhibitions are organised throughout the year. The former Maison Rouge spinning mill in the town centre is now home to the Museum of the Cévennes Valleys. The building bears witness to the town's industrial heritage and the importance of silk in its history. The tourist office is also housed in this exceptional building. To enjoy the great outdoors, head to the “Maison de la Randonnée” in Thoiras. There are around sixty activities to keep the whole family entertained: hiking, mountain biking, tree climbing, horse riding, water sports, climbing, via-ferrata, fishing… Visit the Trabuc cave, an exceptional site that reveals sculptures created by water over the centuries, only 15 km from Saint-Jean-du-Gard.
