Tourism / Discovery

Looking for accessible getaways ? Stay in Bélesta, a charming village located at 500 meters above sea level in eastern Ariège ! The Notre-Dame du Val d'Amour Chapel is part of the town's heritage. Built before the 14th century, its history has been torn between its original Catholicism and the rise of Protestantism in the 16th century. Craving the outdoors ? The town of Bélesta is located within two Natura 2000 classified areas. The first, called "Garonne, Ariège, Hers, Salat, Pique, and Neste," aims to protect habitats for certain migratory fish, including salmon. The second, "Gorges de la Frau and Bélesta," seeks to preserve areas highly valued by certain bird species during their breeding season. You might even hear the song of a European Turtle Dove, a species classified as Vulnerable ! Discover the Bélesta Forest, a preserved natural space offering numerous hiking opportunities. This forest has been recognized for centuries for the quality of its fir trees, which were used for ship masts under the reign of Louis XIV. Take a walk along the Fontestorbes Fountain trail, a mysterious intermittent water source flowing from a cave that you can enter when the water level is low. This phenomenon is unique in Europe, as the flow can vary from 1,800 liters per second to just 50 ! Many hiking trails around the town allow you to gain altitude, but if you prefer to explore below ground, visit the Gouffre des Corbeaux, a 60-meter-deep chasm with an observation platform in the middle of the forest, surrounded by local legends. Just 15 km southwest, visit Montségur Castle, which once overlooked the valley and its village. Built before the 13th century, this fortress played a significant role during the various crusades that ravaged the region.
