Tourism / Discovery

At the southern tip of the Basque Coast, Hendaye Plage is renowned for its family-friendly atmosphere and its vast stretch of fine sand facing the Atlantic Ocean. Sheltered by the bay, the beach offers excellent conditions for both swimming and learning to surf. Its long seafront promenade is perfect for a leisurely stroll, lined with Neo-Basque villas, shops and lively cafés. Offshore, the Deux Jumeaux (Twin Rocks) are one of Hendaye’s most iconic landmarks. They can be admired from the beach or by following the trails through the Abbadia Estate, a vast natural area of heathland, cliffs and ocean views. Overlooking the coastline, Abbadia Castle-Observatory is well worth a visit. This Neo-Gothic residence, designed for Antoine d’Abbadie, features remarkable interiors, an astronomical observatory and a fascinating world inspired by the owner's travels. The walk can then continue along the Basque Corniche, whose spectacular coastal panoramas are among the finest in the region. From the beach district, you can also reach the marina and board the shuttle boat to Hondarribia. In just a few minutes, you cross into Spain to explore the colourful streets, ancient ramparts and lively squares of this charming historic town.
