Discover Oradour-sur-Glane, a place steeped in memory in the heart of France. Nestling in the verdant Limousin countryside, this peaceful village witnessed one of the darkest episodes of the Second World War, hence its name of “martyr village”. On 10 June 1944, Oradour-sur-Glane was the scene of the merciless massacre of its inhabitants by Nazi troops. The remains of this tragic event are still intact, freezing the village in time as a harrowing memorial. There are places that cannot be forgotten. Visiting Oradour-sur-Glane takes you straight back in time, to empty cobbled streets, ruined houses and abandoned objects that are silent witnesses to this tragedy. Each building bears the scars of the past and offers a striking glimpse of the barbarity of war. The Centre de la mémoire invites you to deepen your exploration of this event and the Second World War through archive documents, movies and testimonies. This will help you better understand the events leading up to that terrible day and pay tribute to the innocent victims. The region offers many other tourist attractions.
