Taking its name from the Latin, « placed in the middle of the waters », Mauzé-sur-le-Mignon is in perfect harmony with its location in the middle of the Marais Poitevin. The town located between La Rochelle (40 km), Rochefort (40 km) and Niort (25 km) invites you to discover its history and its natural environment while walking along the harbor and the towpath.
Find a walking trail and a fitness circuit (2,7 km long) next to the towpath.
Follow for instance the « Au fil du Mignon » trail, showing you the important crossing point from Poitou to the ocean. The city hold the title of « Green Venice » for a long time thanks to its excellent location.
René Caillié, an explorer from Mauzé, also contributed to the fame of his home town. He is famous for his explorations in Senegal, Guinea, but especially in Mauritania and Mali. In 1842, a bronze bust of him was inaugurated on the former Teinture bridge (today the R.Caillé bridge). To pay tribute to him, the city decided in 1999 to award the René Caillé prize each year to an adventure story experienced by the author.
During your stay, visit the other monuments that have also written the city’s history: the castle towers dating from the 13th century, the Saint-Pierre church or the flour mill.
