Stop off in the town of Coulonges-sur-l'Autize, just 20 km from Niort!
Standing proudly in the centre of the town, visit the church of Saint-Etienne. Listed as a French Historic Monument, it is thought to have been built between the 12th and 15th centuries. Not far from the church, admire the Château de Coulonges-sur-l'Autize, built in the 15th century and perfectly representative of the Renaissance style. It has played host to such historic French figures as King Charles IX, Queen Catherine de Médicis and King Henri III.
As the gateway to the Marais Pointevin Regional Nature Park, there are plenty of walks among the trees and water features. You'll probably be lucky enough to admire birds, mammals and fish in their natural habitat!
