Tourism / Discovery

Awarded the "Towns and Lands of Art and History" (Villes et Pays d’Art et d’Histoire) label, Saint-Omer is a medieval town that reveals a rich heritage, many legends and a wide choice of hiking trails. Located less than 40 km from the Belgian border, the town lies between Calais (47 km) and Lille (66 km). The Grande Place in Saint-Omer is the nerve centre of this town in the Audomarois region, in the heart of the old town. Stroll through the cobbled streets and monuments and you'll find plenty of bars and restaurants. The town hall is located on the square and hides an Italian-style theatre: Le moulin à café. The town centre, with its stones and landscapes, bears witness to its history. The Notre-Dame cathedral boasts an ornate interior, an impressive nave and some amazing treasures that make this monument a must-see. It was included on the first list of National Heritage sites in 1840. For cultural outings, visit the two museums in the town centre: The Musée Sandelin, housed in a magnificent 18th-century mansion. It features almost 3,000 works of art and objects dating from the Middle Ages to the 19th century; a wonderful invitation to explore art history. The Musée Henri Dupuis pays tribute to this 19th-century local collector and presents his natural history collection. Other monuments such as the Jesuit chapel or the remains of the Saint-Bertin abbey are also well worth a visit. You can explore Saint-Omer by following these hiking trails, perfect for discovering the local heritage: - Les Fondations religieuses (1.3 km) - Cité marchande (2.9 km) - Au fil de l'eau (2.6 km) - Le charme des grandes demeures (1.5 km) For a quiet stroll, head to the park for a moment in nature. A little further on, 5 km from the site, take the time to visit the Romelaëre nature reserve, one of the most beautiful sites in the Pas-de-Calais. Learn more about botany, observe rare species and immerse yourself in this protected ecosystem by following one of the three trails. Less than 30km away, Parc Dennlys welcomes the whole family from April to November (check opening days and times online) with around thirty attractions to please everyone.
