Tourism / Discovery

Located 29 km from Arras, Bapaume is a destination marked by several historical events that led to the construction of many of its monuments. The history of this small town is based on its central position during conflicts such as the two World Wars. Some monuments have stood the test of time, recounting the most curious moments in local history: the Town Hall, the Church Saint-Nicolas, the underground passages, the Faidherbe statue or the Briquet-Taillandier monument. A stroll through the town centre will reveal all its facets. The statue of Notre-Dame-de-Pitié is also a must-see in Bapaume. It is said to be over 600 years old, and legend has it that she worked miracles by healing the local people. Just a short walk from the campsite, you will find a little natural corner that invites you to take a stroll. This is the motte-and-bailey castle, where the ancient castle and its keep were located. Today it is a park where you can walk along the old wall path and see where the buildings once stood. Part of the folklore of Northern France, giants are widely represented and feature both fictional and real characters. You may have the chance to see the Eclusier (5 m high), Marguerite (5 m) and Eloi (4,5 m), a family of giants born in 1891, 1996 and 2016 respectively.
