In the heart of Champagne and far from the hustle and bustle, unwind in nature on the shores of Lake Der: one of the largest artificial lakes in Europe. Designed in 1974 to regulate water levels in the Marne, which flows into the Seine, the lake fills up every year in early spring, inviting visitors to enjoy its natural surroundings. Follow the cycle paths to admire the beautiful views over the lake or stroll through a forest of ancient oak trees. Nautical activities open in April: boat hire, pedalos, paddle boats, sailing school... there is something to suit everyone! Lots of beaches are also available for a pleasant family outing. The site is home to over 300 species of birds, including the famous grey cranes. The best chance of spotting them is from mid-October to mid-March, in the early hours of the morning by standing on the dyke beside the lake. If you want to learn more about local history, visit the ‘Village Musée du Der’. It recounts the history of the 3 villages that have disappeared and the rescue of the half-timbered church of Nuisement-aux-Bois. A wonderful walk through the centuries awaits you! For heritage sights, a 60km route links around ten typical Champagne villages, where you can admire the timbered churches unique in France.
