Motorhome area of Châteauvillain (Haute Marne)

Just 25km from Chaumont lies the small town of Châteauvillain, in the Haute-Marne department, renowned for its heritage. Its medieval atmosphere has earned it the "Petite Cité de Caractère" label. The castle was built in the 12th century, but you can still see 20 of the 60 towers from that era as you stroll along the ramparts. The church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption also stands in the town centre. Its façade, listed as a National Heritage site since 1972, was rebuilt under the direction of Jacques-Germain Soufflot, the great Neoclassical architect. A true symbol of its importance, the town lies on the itinerary of the "Via Francigena", the pilgrimage route linking Canterbury to Rome. Still considered to be part of the Middle Ages, discover the town's wash-house! Dating from the 12th century, its floating wooden floor is unique in France. Also a figure from the Middle Ages, cross the bridge leading to Porte Madame, which was one of the town's three main gates. It is the only one to have endured through the centuries and is now the entrance to the "Parc aux Daims". A hunting ground for the Lord of Châteauvillain in the 17th century, the park is still home to over a hundred fallow deer, which can be seen in complete freedom. The park is also worth a visit for its greenery, which contrasts with the forest landscape of the region. If you'd like to take a break from the town and walk among the trees, Châteauvillain is a good starting point for exploring the Forêts National Park, a Natura 2000 site. Located in the northern part of the park, many walking trails start from the town and guide you through the flora and fauna typical of the region. Our favourite trail?
