Tourism / Discovery
Welcome to Schœnau, in the heart of the Grand Ried, in Central Alsace. This peaceful village, located on the border with Germany, lies halfway between Strasbourg (52 km) and Colmar (33 km).
A destination rich in nature, Schœnau is surrounded by greenery that you can explore on scenic walks along watercourses. The Rhine, the pond, and the Rhine Forest are must-see spots, home to a lush variety of flora and fauna. The forest benefits from the Natura 2000 label, ensuring a peaceful experience as you stroll along dozens of kilometers of trails. A nature reserve is located on the island of Rhinau, just across from the campsite. This exceptional wintering site hosts over 60,000 waterbirds each January.
From Schœnau, explore the village and its surroundings with several hiking trails showcasing both the historical and natural heritage:
North Circuit: 5 km through the heart of the Rhine Forest, also called "the Rhine Jungle"
South Circuit: 3 km to discover the southern part of the Tulla Dyke
Combined Circuit: 8 km covering both the north and south of the Tulla Dyke while crossing the Rhine Forest
Mill Circuit: 8 km along the Muhlbach, passing by traditional mills
Grand Loop: 22 km to explore the Grand Ried and its unique landscapes
By bike, a 20 km greenway also takes you through the Rhine Forest, offering insights into the history of Schœnau, Artolsheim, and Sundhouse.
To the north of the village, you’ll find a key part of Schœnau’s heritage: the motte-and-bailey castle, one of the last remains of the medieval fortress. In the Middle Ages, it housed the village’s castle and is now one of the best-preserved archaeological sites in Alsace.
The Grand Ried is a wonderful region to visit during the holiday season. Nativity trails, treasure hunts, and festive activities make this beautiful part of Grand Est a magical winter destination.
