Motorhome area of Beaune-la-Rolande

Located 56 km northeast of Orléans, Beaune-la-Rolande is a town steeped in history, named after the Gallic God Belenos and La Rolande, the river that runs through the village from the south. With its fascinating historical heritage, hiking trails and culinary specialities, this beautiful city has a lot to offer! Beaune-la-Rolande was tragically marked by the Second World War. In 1939, a camp was built to hold future German prisoners of war, before being transformed by the Germans into a French prisoner of war camp a year later. It then became an internment and transit camp for Jews deported to Auschwitz between May 1941 and July 1943. A monument has been erected on the site of this former camp in memory of the victims. The church and the wash house are two landmarks of Beaune-la-Rolande. The church, listed as a National Heritage Site, boasts some magnificent features, including a spectacular organ and a magnificent painting by Frédéric Bazille. This impressionist painter is well known to art lovers all over the world. A monument was built in his memory, following his heroic behaviour during the Franco-Prussian war. On 28 November 1970, the town was the scene of a terrible battle in which the painter was killed after launching an assault against the Zouaves army.
