On the border between the Eure-et-Loir and Loiret departments, discover Toury, a small town in the heart of the Beauce region. One hypothesis is that the town got its name from the ‘Pierre de Gargantua’, a dolmen visible in the Square Monteil, which is thought to be a sacrificial stone dedicated to the Germanic god Thor. Another vestige of the past is worth discovering during your stay in Toury : the ‘Gite aux Roys’ castle. It became a stopping place for illustrious kings of France from the 12th century onwards, after Philippe Auguste declared that it would be indecent for a king to go to an inn. Over the centuries, Toury also witnessed Louis Blériot's first flight in 1908. This round trip flight between Toury and Artenay served as a trial run before the famous Channel crossing in 1909. Explore the history of Toury on a walk that will certainly take you as far as the Bois de la Perche landscaped park, recently laid out in the heart of the town. Known for its vast agricultural plains, considered to be the ‘breadbasket of France’, the Beauce region offers a unique panorama of greenery and crops as far as the eye can see. These landscapes are perfect for walking or cycling. Be sure to visit one of the Beauce windmills, a true testament to the region's rich heritage. On the eve of the French Revolution, there were no fewer than 1,700 windmills, but today only a dozen or so remain. The Moulin d'Ouarville, a listed historic monument, is the largest and oldest of these. It can be visited on Sunday afternoons from April to October. A land of history with a capital H, the Toury region offers a wide range of places to visit. Discover the Château d'Amoy, built in the style of Louis XIII, and its magnificent 14-hectare park. It can be visited from July to September. On the edge of the Orléans forest, surrounded by parkland, a lake and a Renaissance garden, don't miss the Château de Chamerolles.
