Located in the autonomous community of Castilla y León, Puebla de Sanabria is a charming mountain town in the province of Zamora, just 20 km from the border with northern Portugal. About 15 km away lies Lake Sanabria, the largest glacial lake on the Iberian Peninsula. It is part of the natural park of the same name and is surrounded by spectacular landscapes such as glacial cirques, valleys, forests, and mountains.
The lake has several beaches perfect for swimming in summer. The largest is Viquiella Beach, with fine sand and calm waters. Whether swimming, sailing, or simply strolling along the shore, the lake’s surroundings invite you to disconnect and enjoy the beautiful scenery.
Among Puebla de Sanabria’s most unique traditions is the Giants’ Parade, a custom with more than 175 years of history, dating back to 1848. These giants can be visited year-round at the Museum of Giants and Big-Heads, located in the historic center. Considered one of the best collections of giants in Spain, it takes center stage on September 7th and 8th, when the figures parade through the town during the solemn procession in honor of the patron saint, Our Lady of Victories.
Don’t miss the Castle of the Counts of Benavente, one of the town’s symbols. Standing at nearly 1,000 meters above sea level, it offers spectacular views from its keep. Puebla de Sanabria, declared a historic-artistic site, preserves its medieval essence with cobbled streets, façades adorned with heraldic coats of arms, and charming balconies.
To complete the experience, nothing compares to tasting the local gastronomy. The area’s gardens produce high-quality ingredients such as beans and cabbages, which are the base of the traditional caldo sanabrés. Octopus, trout, and cod are also essential parts of Sanabrian cuisine, with recipes that combine flavor, tradition, and local produce.
