Tourism / Discovery

Visit the town of Gâvres, a small peninsula in the heart of Morbihan, less than 30 km from Lorient. Discover the many characteristics of this historic town dating back to megalithic times. With its large beach on the south side, you can enjoy the fresh waters of the Atlantic Ocean, the fine sandy shores or the coastal paths, far from the hustle and bustle of the seaside resorts. The blue waters will delight everyone. For the more daring, go kitesurfing! The spot is perfect for its size and also because there are no rocks under the water. The other side of the bank, however, is more to the delight of shellfish pickers. This place, known as "la petite mer" (the little sea), is renowned for its oysters, cockles, mussels, clams and prawns, which you can enjoy endlessly! (Beware, however, of regulations that change from year to year). By the way, did you know that the town gets its Breton name from these little orange or grey shellfish? Explore the narrow streets of the town, typical of Breton coastal villages. The harbour, which in the mid-20th century was renowned for its sardines, also offers a stunning panoramic view of the whole bay. Admire the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the town of Port-Louis and its ramparts on the other. Accessible by boat from the harbour of Gâvres, this port town has everything to surprise you. With the "Cité Maritime" (Maritime City), "Ville Historique" (Historic Town) and "Petite cité de caractère" (Small Town of Character) labels, explore the town by wandering through its charming narrow streets or visiting the French East India Company Museum, which recounts its glorious trading past. The harbour also has a historical dimension, as it was from Port-Louis that the first liners bound for New York set sail at the end of the 18th century.
