Tourism / Discovery

Chalon-sur-Saône is particularly easy to explore from this area located close to the town centre. In just a few minutes, you can reach the pedestrian streets, shops and lively squares of the historic centre. Around Saint-Vincent Cathedral, old houses and half-timbered façades create a charming setting in the heart of this Town of Art and History. To make sure you do not miss anything, follow the Chemin de l’Orbandale, a 4.4 km walking trail featuring 35 points of interest. It leads through the narrow streets of the historic centre, inner courtyards, gardens and monuments before continuing towards Île Saint-Laurent. It is an ideal way to discover Chalon at your own pace. Chalon-sur-Saône is also known as the birthplace of photography. Nicéphore Niépce was born here, and the Nicéphore Niépce Museum, located along the river, traces the history of photography from the earliest images to contemporary creations. Art and history lovers can also visit the Musée Vivant Denon, dedicated in particular to fine arts and archaeology. The walk naturally continues towards the Saône. Port Villiers, the quays and then Île Saint-Laurent reveal another side of the town, with riverside walks, terraces and lovely views of the historic centre. The island also provides access to Rue de Strasbourg and its many restaurants. Chalon is also an excellent gateway to the Côte Chalonnaise. The Maison des Vins de la Côte Chalonnaise is located very close to the motorhome area, before you head towards Givry, Mercurey or Rully. Wine-growing villages, estates, greenways and vine-covered hillsides offer wonderful Burgundy excursions just a few kilometres from the town centre.
