50 km north of Lyon, Châtillon is located in the heart of the Dombes, France’s leading freshwater fish farming region. Its unique environment provides a lot of heavenly landscapes with ponds (more than a thousand!), horses and hundreds of bird species. The town’s history has been built up over several centuries, which is reflected today by the remains of several monuments. The 15th century Halles, which now houses the market, and the Porte de Villars are the remains of the fortified ramparts and the Vieux Château. A walk to the gates of the castle will give you a breathtaking view of the roofs of this medieval city. The ‘’Apothicairerie’’ is the former pharmacy of the royal hospital, where remedies were made and sold for almost two centuries. Today, you can admire an impressive collection of 120 faience pots dating from the beginning of the 19th century. Discover Châtillon’s superb floral scenery by visiting the arboretum, a magnificent 8-hectare site. There, you will find an educational apiary which can be visited on reservation. Châtillon is indeed the leading honey-producing town in France! A true tasting place, the Châtillon local market was elected ‘’Most Beautiful Market in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region’’ in 2018. The local speciality: frogs. You can also savour Bresse chicken and carp, other specialities from the Dombe region.
